Summary
[edit]Description"Im Formosan"- A Formosan, c. 1652 (cropped).jpg |
English: This drawing, by German traveller and sometime VOC employee Caspar Schmalkalden, depicts a Formosan aborigine running. In his hands he holds what appear to be noisemakers, which the accompanying poem refers to as his "Clink and Clank."
The translation is as follows: We run through the world, trot the whole day through Behind our Clink and Clank that we hold within our hands. We live from the hunt -- He who can, hunts. And when our arrows miss, the hounds run ahead. Used by permission of the Gotha Research Library (Gotha Forschungsbibliotek) (finding aid: Chart. B 533, fo. 284). |
