Description

Tapestry with scenes of a Boar and Bear Hunt (detail)
English: Tapestry with Scenes of a Boar and Bear Hunt (detail)

About 1425-30
Southern Netherlands (now Belgium)
Wool, tapestry woven
Formerly at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire (residence of the Dukes of Devonshire)

Tapestries were expensive and much prized. They could be hung floor-to-ceiling and edge-to-edge to provide insulation in a draughty room, and they were a vehicle for decoration and narrative. This example shows hunting, a sport that was exclusive to the king and aristocracy. The nobles wear costly silks and furs rather than practical hunting clothes. Very little costume survives from this period, but this tapestry gives a good indication of the extravagant fashions of the Burgundian court.

This tapestry features a number of elegant couples. The lady wears a sumptuous gown decorated with back-to-front letters that spell the motto \'Much desire\'. The man\'s sleeve is decorated with silver shapes that resemble teardrops and probably also relate to the pursuit of love.

Accepted by HM Government in lieu of tax payable on the estate of the 10th Duke of Devonshire and allocated to the Victoria and Albert Museum
