Français : Tenue protectrice de médecin de la peste. (Début 17ème siècle)
Il porte un costume entièrement fait de cuir qui était une carapace efficace contre les puces. Il portait un masque orné d'un bec rempli d’herbes odoriférantes pour masquer l’odeur des cadavres. Pour terminer, une paire de bésicles protégeait les yeux. La baguette servait à soulever les habits des malades pour vérifier la présence d'ulcères des ganglions. Ce mannequin est exposé au musée de l'Hôpital Notre-Dame à la Rose de Lessines (Belgique). <http://www.notredamealarose.com/>English: Pest doctor protective gear (replica, original early XVIIth century) as displayed in the Hospital 'Notre Dame a la Rose' (Lessines, Belgium). The mask 'nose' was filled with herbs and vinegar to hide bad cadaver smell and/or avoid contamination. The stick was used to lift sick people clothings and check their body parts for symptomns, mainly ulcers in the lower body parts. |
