Question about license templates and wikidata

[edit]

Hi! I wanted to find out how many files that was licensed GFDL across all wikis so I started this little project but I found out it was not easy because som many templates exist and not all are linked to Wikidata. So it turned into a projects to link all license templates via wikidata but with hundreds of wikis it will take a lot of time.

So my question is if you know of a way to find the license templates that are not linked to wikidata?

I can imagine it will not be easy because not all license templates are clearly marked as a license template. So I was thinking perhaps any template used at least in one file page could be a substitute for a license template.

I asked ChatGpt and it suggested that I moved all files to Commons to make it easier to find all GFDL files. Sounds easy enough. It only took me 1 year+ to do that to Japanese Wikipedia. So I guess in 114 years all files will be moved. --MGA73 (talk) 14:05, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There really isn't. A lot of projects use COM:Machine-readable data and can be found that way, but it's not consistent and you'll miss files. Layout templates also will make things more complex, as they will sometimes contain the machine-readable data instead. Figuring out which templates are on Wikidata or not I have no idea the best way to do that. Good luck. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 20:52, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I was afraid there was no easy way. So far I have linked like 100 templates to Wikidata and I also try to add metadata to some of them. But I will surely miss some templates if the only way is to do it manually. If you ever get an idea let me know. Even if you do not get the idea until in 50 years it will still mean I will save 64 years of time :-D --MGA73 (talk) 06:03, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
