Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 06:41, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Categories
[edit]Hi, Underlying lk. Do you know the existence of categories such as category:People of the Ottoman Empire in art, Category:Military people of the Ottoman Empire in art, Category:Costumes of the Ottoman Empire, Category:Military uniforms of the Ottoman Empire, Category:Uniforms of the Ottoman Army, Category:Uniforms of the Ottoman Navy etc. ? Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 05:03, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Takabeg! I will surely take the time to review my uploads and add all the appropriate categories. Thanks for the suggestions!--Underlying lk (talk) 10:16, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 21:43, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, Mr Underlying lk, I noticed you made changes to File:Use of Sharia by country.svg. Would you do me a favour, and change United Kingdom to grey? I do not know hot to edit SVGs, but this is a blatant error that needs correcting. Motivation of cancellation
[edit]because was canceled the image of the calligraphy of Allah (Allah1.jpg in wikipedia italian version)? Christians would be happy if Muslims cancel the image of Jesus used in its main pages? see pages https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allah https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunnismo and so on 50 pages (more or less)

Re: copyright violations.
[edit]You deleted two files I uploaded that were not subject to copyright because as their attached template said, they are state published in Egypt. many other files on commons are uploaded on a similar basis. I must insist you restore them to commons.--عبد المؤمن (talk) 01:32, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- I'm unaware of any such rule in Egypt. Government works are also copyrighted, unless there is a law saying otherwise. The licence template you used, {{PD-Egypt-official}}, only applies to documents, not photos.--Underlying lk (talk) 03:44, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- ah. It's unfortunate commons doesn't allow for publishing official visit photos from Egypt. I shall have to shuffle through the articles of that very long document myself. It's certainly the norm in Egypt to publish such photos without copyright problems, maybe article 171 is of relevance? How exactly are allowances made for other countries to publish such photos on here?--عبد المؤمن (talk) 07:53, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- It must be specifically allowed by the law, see {{PD-PhilippinesGov}} for one.--Underlying lk (talk) 08:29, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!
[edit]- ⧼Wikibase-terms/Underlying lk⧽: Deutsch, Ελληνικά, English, français, magyar, italiano, македонски, 日本語, русский, svenska
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]
Thanks,

[edit]sorry, i am not e e cumminɡs or archy the cockroach. i somehow stumbled onto a russian paɡe and now the shift key is brinɡinɡ up cyrillic characters.
hi underlyinɡ ik. i don't mean to hammer on you about your contributions. i am sure the ɡreat majority of your contributions are ok and are valuable and we appreciate them. its just they are pretty strict here about stuff beinɡ truly free. i think so anyway, i'm not a reɡular. it may be that the de facto rule is 'well, in a case like this where there's really zero percent chance that anybody will object to us hostinɡ the imaɡe, its really ok' but afaik the rules are the rules. i know there's lot of stuff here that's not leɡit, such as almost all pictures of buildinɡs and statues in russia and enɡland and so forth (those places don't have freedom of panorama i don't think) and so on. of course all these can be uploaded to the enɡlish wikipedia instead because we allow fair use and we iɡnore freedom of panorama restrictions and so on. cheers and happy wikiinɡ, ̃̃--Herostratus (talk) 18:16, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
- @Herostratus: I understand your decision; the purpose of Commons is to host free files after all, so if these files are violating someone's copyright it is better for the project (and potential re-users) if they are deleted.
- By the way, it's not that low-risk copyright violations are tolerated here, it's simply that there aren't enough users with the required knowledge of copyright laws to keep track of the copyright status of 107,052,539 files. If you're knowledgeable about these things, I'm sure you will find plenty of cases where your help will be extremely welcome.
- The issue of freedom of panorama is not at all ignored, and there are often cases where images are mass-deleted just because of that. In the specific cases you mentioned though, freedom of panorama is less of a concern: it is mostly allowed in the UK (for 3D works), and thanks to the efforts of Wikimedia Russia, it will soon be allowed by Russian law as well.--Underlying lk (talk) 11:08, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
ːːok, thanks for understandinɡ. (i still cannot type capital letters here even after rebootinɡ my computer and so forth unless i want to type ʎɪɬɛ θɥɪʃ.) that's excellent news about russia, i think that no-freedom-of-panorama laws are an overreach and an unreasonable impinɡement on human culture and communication. --Herostratus (talk) 15:30, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

File:Abdulah Al-Ahmar and Salal 1965 - Al-Jund - Taiz.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

[edit]Man, why do you want just to remove my uploads? Maybe it would be better to ask me about questions that you have, and if my answers won't be sufficiently good you will try to remove them a? Do you know Georgian? Do you want to see our chating about this files ? This bureaucracy is crushing :/ --g. balaxaZe★ 22:26, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
- I tagged those files for deletion as they appeared to be copyright violations, and they were deleted because at least one administrator agreed with my assessment. It's difficult to distiguish an immaterial permission given by 'a friend' by a misappropriation of someone's work. If you want to reupload those files, try COM:OTRS.--Underlying lk (talk) 18:25, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

FYI I had been adding the SA category because Nick did last year and I assumed there was a good reason for it. I don't mind it being removed and tend to remove overcategorisation myself. HelenOnline 11:53, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Helen, I removed the "Cultural heritage monuments in South Africa" categories after creating new categories for every town/city; once the subcategory is added keeping the parent category is redundant, as you pointed out. Hopefully this new categorisation will make it easier to sort the new files that will be uploaded for WLM 2014. That was the idea, anyway!--Underlying lk (talk) 21:54, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

- Every image with the template {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2014|za}} is automatically added to Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 in South Africa, so it should be fine as nothing is lost in the category tree.--Underlying lk (talk) 12:10, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

New Robben Island category
[edit]Hi Underlying lk, I don't understand this new category. The whole island is a protected site. HelenOnline 10:36, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Avertissement de suppression de fichier multimédia
[edit]Bonjour Underlying lk,
This Algerian photograph or work of applied art, which was first published prior to January 1, 1987, is currently in the public domain in Algeria because it was granted a term of protection of 10 years from publication by Article 64 of Ordinance No. 73–14 of 3 April 1973.
Although the 1973 ordinance was abrogated by Article 166 of Ordinance No. 97–10 of 6 March 1997, which was itself abrogated by Article 163 of the currently applicable Ordinance No. 03–05 of 19 July 2003, this did not lead to a renewal of the copyright of photographs which had already fallen into the public domain, because both the 1997 and the 2003 ordinances contained transitional provisions explicitly disallowing retroactive protection of out-of-copyright works. In order to be hosted on Commons, all works must be in the public domain in the United States as well as in their source country. The copyright of all Algerian photographs published prior to 1987 had expired in Algeria on the U.S. date of restoration (April 19, 1998). Such photographs are thus currently in the public domain in the United States.
|
||
Algerian photographs created on or before December 31, 1973 which had never been published as of January 1, 1987 are currently in the public domain in Algeria but not in the United States, as they were still copyrighted on the date of restoration. Photographs whose copyright was restored in the U.S. by the URAA are no longer accepted at Wikimedia Commons. |
Donc je vois aucun problème de laisser les fichiers sur Wikemidia Commons puisque la loi algérienne en dessus l'explique bien que les droits d'auteurs sont pas violés. J'espère que tous les wikipédiens tomberont d'accord. Cordialement. Saber68 20:07, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
- @Saber68: Hi, as I have written in the deletion nomination here, you cannot assume that every photo of the Algerian War has been first published in Algeria (which is a precondition to apply Algerian laws). I traced some of your uploads to French or western sources, which means that those photos are violating someone's copyright on them. To claim that Algerian laws apply, you need to provide some evidence that the files were first published in Algeria, rather than they are just part of the collection of an Algerian museum, which does not help in determining their origin and so their copyright status. Cheers, Underlying lk (talk) 20:41, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Estimado amigo:
Gracias, --Jofrigerio (talk) 02:58, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Jofrigerio: Hi, the problem with the upload is that the author of the painting is not stated, so that the copyright status of that image cannot be determined. The current version of the upload page shows you as the author, but this is incorrect unless you painted it yourself (simply taking a photo of it is not enough to claim authorship). Regards,--Underlying lk (talk) 07:16, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for Koppen map-Iran
[edit]Hello Underlying lk, While seeing Koppen maps, I saw your very nice work for Iran, Iran Koppen map. Thanks for creating the Iran Koppen map from Asia map. Would you please consider doing similarly for India from Asia. I tried adding India Koppen map to India article in Wikipedia & it was suggested to get a clearer picture (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=India&diff=683775491&oldid=683762520). May be with only India in the map & others removed (like Iran's map created from Asia), there is a chance for India Koppen map to be added to India Wikipedia article. A map legend attached onto the map body with descriptions for only the major 7 climates zones for India, would be a great addition too.(It is in the summary part of the image file here). Thank you very much. From user https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:2know4power. 2know4power (talk) 21:57, 18 November 2015 (UTC).

[edit]Copyright status: File:2005-2010 modernization program of Russian Railways.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:2005-2010 modernization program of Russian Railways.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
